"...in fifty years, do you believe that people will be recognizably human?"
- Greg Bear

Telespectroscope
Device for searching for habitable (Earth-like) planets.

In his search for a suitable Earth-like planet, Ran Argal used specialized instruments to find a habitable planet.

And each mechanical eye, when it found planetary systems in its field, automatically shifted upon them a higher powered telespectroscope which recorded on permanent film the size, mean temperature and atmospheric conditions of these worlds.

(The telespectroscope recorded the conditions of these other worlds)

A telespectroscope is a combination of a telescope and a spectroscope, used for spectroscopic analysis of radiation from stars and other celestial bodies, created by Joseph Fraunhofer in the nineteenth century.

Compare to the Reflectocosmic Spectrometer from Buck Rogers: 2430 AD (1929) by Nowlan and Calkin, the Electro-Telescope from Blood of the Moon (1936) by Ray Cummings and Spectro-Flash Analysis from Salvage in Space (1933) by Jack Williamson
