Vertical Farm In Singapore's Output Is 1.5 Tons Per Day
A new vertical farm in Singapore is slated to produce up to one and a half tons of tasty salad every day in 2021, according to German firm &ever.
Singapore’s land scarcity makes conventional farming a real challenge and the country is keen to embrace solutions that don’t have a large footprint.
In terms of price, Schwarz said: “We think that we’re pricing our products similar to existing premium organic produce that you can find on the Singapore market today.”
He added: “The price point for indoor vertical farming products in many markets in the world, for example in the U.S., is very expensive. Our system is really geared towards making a meaningful contribution and we have taken quite some time to get things right, and to have the most energy efficient solution on the market.”
In their wonderful 1931 classic Exiles of the Moon, perhaps the best writing duo of science fiction's Golden Age - Schachner and Zagat - wrote about food factories.
Pohl and Kornbluth's 1952 classic The Space Merchants described a kind of vertical farm; the "Chlorella plantations" was used to grow greenery for food.
…the Chlorella plantation, a towering eighty-story structure like the office "In-and-Out" baskets stacked up to the sky. There were mirrored louvers at each tier. Surrounding the big building were acres of eye-stabbing glare. I realized that this was more mirrored louvers to catch the sun, bounce it off more mirrors inside the tiers, and onto the photosynthesis tanks. It was a spectacular, though not uncommon, sight from the air.
