"it slowly dawned on me that the landscape of science is maybe what interests people a great deal in science fiction."
- Gregory Benford

Shock Hammock
Special netting oriented for pilots in high gee spacecraft.

The author makes an interesting statement in this story about accelerations of two gravities and greater; I didn't think that serious research had been done on this until after WWII.

Then they forced him off the field and I was climbing into the cockpit, tightening the anchor straps of the shock hammock about the straitjacket I wore.

And I expected to need them. Two gravitites mean double weight, during eight days, fighting your lungs and heart. If you take it lengthwise, it can't be done, but by lying stretched out on the hammock at right angles to the flight line, it's just possible.
