Flame Barrier
A form of protective force field.

A fan-shaped pink fire spread skyward from two machines that stood in the center of the street. The flame was a very pale pink and completely transparent. It looked electronic, deadly.

Maltby explained his presence.

"Oh, yes," the man nodded, "weíve been expecting you. Iím to take you at once to the meteorological room of the ship. Just a momentó"

The flame barrier went down and Maltby was led into one of the buildings.
