"The thing that I'm most interested in at the moment is the so-called Infinite Energy solution - the possibility of finding new ways of tapping into virtually limitless sources of energy."
- Arthur C. Clarke

Sub-Space
A dimension or a transmission medium other than our own, which allows faster-than-light communication or movement.

As far as I know, this was the first use of this term.

The repulsor elements tapped subspace, and hence were unimpeded by any waves in normal space time.
From Crystallized Thought, by Nat Schachner.
Published by Astounding Science Fiction in 1937

Jack Williamson uses it in a slightly different way:

These little coils create a sub-space about the metal bead...

They warp space itself to form a tiny sphere - in effect, a tiny universe - strong enough to withstand unthinkable pressure and millions of degrees of heat.
