"[Science fiction] has become big business, where books are merchandised and promoted and distributed and placed on sale like slabs of bacon or cans of soup."
- Frederik Pohl

Earmite
A small speaker that you can put in your ear.

This appears to be a description of what we would call a Bluetooth earpiece today.

Rickenharp was listening to a collector's item Velvet Underground tape from 1968. It was capped into his Earmite. The song was "White Light/White Heat." ...He screwed the Earmite a little deeper so that the vibrations would shiver the bone around his ear, chills that lapped through him in harmony with the guitar chords.

One thing that an Earmite seems to have (that most earbuds and headsets lack) is adequate bass...

Compare this item with the Seashell radio (also called the thimble radio) from Ray Bradbury's 1953 novel Fahrenheit 451.
