"Why does a creative person create? It's a type of compulsion. I like to explore new ideas."
- Bart Kosko

Field-Projector
A device that dematerializes a person and then sends forth a ray that will then rematerialize a person at the end.

Excellent early shot at the transporter beam of Star Trek fame, tested in the story by out-of-work boxer Slugger Martin. He's been hired off a park bench by ol' Doc Murtha. Slugger has just the qualifications Doc has in mind. "You're a pugilist, eh? That's good. I'm looking for somebody with a strong body and a dim intelligence..."

Doc Murtha went to a thing in the middle of one room, a flat, round copper platfom setting on top of a lot of tubes and coils and junk like that. He laid his hand on it proudly.

"The Murtha field-projector," he said. "It is what will hurl you forth as dematerialized force on your great journey."

"Could you send me to Poughkeepsie on that thing?" I asked. "I know a dame there I ain't seen for a long while."

"You're going a lot farther than Poughkeepsie, Martin," the doc said, laughing kind of strange...

...Doc Murtha dashed around, jerking levers and knobs. Motors or things like that began to hum, and there was a cracking from the tubes under my platform...

"Holy smoke!" I gasped, looking around me. "The doc's radio has shot me off to China or some place!"

Teleportation is, of course, a favorite of sci-fi writers; see the earlier Vibra-Transmitter (1933) and the more recent stepping disks (1970) from Niven's Ringworld.

Take a look at USAF Looks Into Teleportation and Quantum Telecloning And 'The Enemy Within' for a modern-day look at the idea of matter transmission.
