CORLEO Robotic Horse Concept Looks Ready To Ride
The CORLEO robotic horse concept introduced by Kawasaki Heavy Industries is four-legged transport designed for human riders. Can't wait!*
The CORLEO is powered by a 150cc 20 horsepower hydrogen engine that generates electricity to drive motors in each of its four legs. Hydrogen is supplied from a rear-mounted canister with a distance projection of ~150 miles.
Each leg features two separate rubber hooves, designed to absorb uneven terrain and provide non-slip stability on surfaces like grass, gravel, and rocky paths.
The rear legs move independently from the front, absorbing shocks during walking or running, while the rider maintains a forward-leaning posture for better visibility when navigating obstacles like steps.
Riders control the CORLEO by shifting their center of gravity, detected through sensors in the footpegs and handlebars. The stirrups are adjustable for optimal positioning, and an onboard display provides real-time navigation and posture feedback, making the ride intuitive and user-friendly.
As I point out, the idea for a mechanical horse has been around for quite a while; I referenced Frank Reade and his Steam Horse, published in 1882.
Even earlier, Emile Souvestre described a steam horse in Le Monde Tel Qu'il Sera (The World As It Shall Be), published in 1846.
Be sure to read about Anthony Boucher's robass from The Quest for Saint Aquin (1951).
It looked harmlessly like a woodpile sheltered against possible rain. Thomas pulled off the skins and contemplated the sleek functional lines of the robass. Smiling, he stowed his minimal gear into its panniers and climbed into the foam saddle. The starlight was bright enough so he could check the necessary coordinates on his map and feed the data into the electronic controls...
*Sadly, this concept envisions the technology of the year 2050.
