The problem of asteroid (or meteor) deflection occupied the minds of early science fiction writers; how can we move through space free of the hazard of space rocks? You'd need some sort of meteorite deflector like the one discussed in On Board the Martian Liner (1931) by Miles J. Breuer:
By evening Chick and Flynn were firm friends; they were talking about reaction-motors, meteorite deflectors, three-dimensional sextants, and such things with a fondness that only the two of them felt.
