Robot English Teacher From KAIRA
A robotic english teacher is currently in use in pilot programs in Seoul, Korea. The robot was developed by Korea Advanced Intelligent Robot Association (KAIRA).
The robots will provide instruction to elementary school students for the next three months. Children will read sentences in English after the robot; the robot will listen to their pronunciation, and offer corrections.
If this program is successful, KAIRA may introduce in-house tutor robots that can stay at home to teach children. The estimated cost for these robots is between 700,000 and 800,000 won (approximately $700-800). The Korean Ministry of Information and Communication has invested more than 3 billion won in research and development.
In his remarkable and highly original 1950's series Cities in Flight, sf writer James Blish wrote about Earth cities (like Scranton, PA) that were able to lift off from the planet due to the development of the spindizzy. Big cities like New York were run by artificially intelligent machines called "city fathers" who were in charge of all education in the city. These computers tutored and assessed every child; only those with skills deemed necessary for the continuation of the city received long-life drugs needed for long voyages between the stars.
