MC10 Electronics Skin Stickers

MC10 has been pioneering wearable electronics, and in particular, electronics you can wear on your skin. Their flexible sensors monitor biological data, and some of them are skin-tight.

Because babies are hard enough to figure out.

Is she eating enough? Is she sleeping enough? Is she hot? Is she cold? Babies and all their delicate little parts can be stressful. We’ve created a baby-soft, flexible, easy-to-apply patch that continuously monitors and wirelessly transmits your child’s temperature to your smartphone. No uncomfortable thermometers. No late-night wake-ups, unless it’s urgent. Just peace of mind.

Benefits:

Low-profile patch is compatible with baby, infant and toddler skin Monitors temperature without waking or disturbing the child Access to real-time, continuous data helps you make more informed choices for your family.

MC10 has come a long way in the last five years; see my earlier article Stretchable Silicon Electronics For Sports Apparel to see how quickly technology evolves.

Keeping an eye on the baby is an old problem for humans, you might not be surprised to read that this electric diaper from David H. Keller's fine 1928 story The Psychophonic Nurse does a pretty good job of predicting this device:

"...suppose the baby gets wet between times? Suppose it starts to cry?"

"I've thought of that, too. In every diaper there is a fine copper wire. When that becomes wet a delicate current is sent - you understand I mean an electrical current, not a watery one - to an amplifier and a certain sound is made, and the nurse will properly react to that sound..."

I guess I could have taken another approach with this story; see these extra comments on the idea of wearable skin electronics in science fiction.
