Motorcycle Racing Suit With Airbags

BMW Motorrad and Dainese are cooperating in joint development of motorcycle apparel with a definite safety edge. The intent is to sell motorcycle rider equipment with fully integrated inflatable protectors for BMW Motorrad.

The first product to emerge from their cooperation will be the DoubleR RaceAir one-piece leather suit with D-AirŪ racing protectors, designed exclusively for use on racetracks. The racing suit is scheduled to be presented at the international EICMA motorcycle show in Milan this November, once BMW Motorrad has completed all the required testing in Munich.

The next stage will be to develop the Dainese D-AirŪ Street System as a retrofit solution for BMW Motorrad. The system is scheduled to be launched in 2015, following successful completion of all crash tests. BMW Motorrad customers will then be able to retrofit an innovative safety system to their motorcycles.

Neal Stephenson wrote about this idea - an airbag jacket - in his 1992 novel Snowcrash:

She jerks the manual release on her cervical collar and goes into full Michelin Man mode as tiny gas cartridges detonate in several strategic locations around her bod. The biggest one goes off like an M-80 at the nape of her neck, unfurling the coverall's collar into a cylindrical gasbag that shoots straight up and encases her entire head. Other airbags go off around her torso and pelvis, paying lots of attention to that spinal column...
