BBC's iPhone App For Field Reporters

The BBC is working on a new iPhone app that will let its reporters file their stories, including video, still camera shots and audio, directly into the BBC's editorial stream from their iPhone or iPad

Martin Turner, head of operations for newsgathering, told Journalism.co.uk developing the software for iPhone was "a logical extension of what the BBC can do already" but added that it was a "significant development".

"Reporters have been using smart phones for a while now but it was never good quality. You might do it when there was a really important story.

"Now it is beginning to be a realistic possibility to use iPhones and other devices for live reporting, and in the end if you've got someone on the scene then you want to be able to use them.

Fans of sf writer Larry Niven of course recall the miniaturized newstaper gear from his 1972 short story Flash Crowd:

A lean young man with an open, curious, friendly face, topped by red-blond hair curly as cotton. A tiny mike at his lips, a small plug in one ear, a coin purse at his belt. In his hands, a heavy gyrostabilized TV camera equipped with a directional mike.

A newstaper...

This short story is also the source of the term flash crowd (or flash mob).
