VW Talking Newspaper Ad
This advertisement speaks for itself - literally. When readers of the Times of India opened their morning paper, an audio chip placed within the pages produced its advertisement as soon as the photodiode that powered the chip was exposed the light.

Fans of author Greg Bear recall the speaker chips used for advertisements in books in his 2003 novel Darwin's Children:
Without thinking, Kaye turned right and found herself in the religious section. Most of the shelves were filled with brightly colored apocalypse novels...Most of the books had speaker chips that could read out the entire story. The same chips replaced jacket copy with vocal come-ons. The shelves murmured softly in a wave, like ghosts triggered by Kaye's brief passage.
