Marauder's Map From RFID Plus Social Networking
A real-life Marauder's Map like that envisaged by J.K. Rowling in her Harry Potter novels will be created at the 25th Chaos Communication Congress in Berlin, Germany. Open Attendee Meta-Data (OpenAMD) system and SocioPatterns.org will merge RFID technology with social networking.

(The Marauder's Map)
Up to one thousand attendees of the 25th Chaos Communication Congress will be able to upgrade their badges to participate. The system will feature a real-time proximity detection system to see what other users are nearby. A web interface will provide participants with the ability to find people with similar interests. They will also be able to see where they've been, what they've been doing and with whom.
The OpenAMD system will be using several visual effects to display this, including an AJAX visual accessible from the conference website and a 3-D visual based on cutting edge graphics technology. All of the software is open source and will be made public after the conference.
People who are inclined to see this sort of development in a less fanciful light are encouraged to compare it to the oppressive surveillance in the near-future U.S. found in Cory Doctorow's excellent 2008 novel Little Brother.
The conference will run from December 27th to the 29th.
