Get Inside The 100 Foot Piano

Sound and Visual artist An-Ting Chung has created a sound sculpture entitled Inside The 100 Foot Piano. The 88 notes of the piano are represented by 88 loudspeakers arranged in an acoustical landscape whose perimeter is over 280 feet.

(Inside the 100 foot piano exhibition)

This is not a live piano performance. The music source in this exhibition is a digital recreation of the famous 1955 recording of pianist Glenn Gould's performance of Bach's Goldberg Variations, made possible with software developed by Zenph Studios technology www.zenph.com. This allowed Ms. Chung to isolate and assign each piano note to a separate Pro Tools track, and ultimately output the whole musical composition through 88 channels of Pro Tools digital to analogue converters.

This exhibition presents no danger to the Earth, but it still reminds me of the Krang:

The "machine" itself towered a hundred meters above them and ran the length of the auditorium, melting into the curved corners... Much of the machine was closed off, but Flinx could see dials and switches catching the light from behind half-open plates...
(Read more about The Krang from Alan Dean Foster's The Tar-Aiym Krang)

The exhibition is going on now at Legacy Recording Studios, Studio A509. 509 W. 38th Street between 10th & 11th Ave in NYC.
