Comments on 'Inaudibility Cloak' Is Theoretically Possible
Can you think of some good uses for a cloaking device that hides you, or an object, acoustically? (Read
the complete story)
"how about sonar? doesn't sonar use soundwaves to detect the presence of an object? if that's the case...if the sound waves pass right through the object...wouldn't it be considered 'undetectable'?"

"It seems like it would work for submarines. American subs are coated with special sonar-absorbing rubberized black paint to make them more stealthy (I think this technology dates from the early 1980's), but this would be even better. I wonder if they will make a metamaterials paint?"
(Bill Christensen 1/12/2008 11:35:37 AM) |
"Didn't Frank Herbert's Dune have inaudibility chambers?
I vaguely remember, in the first book, where in the Emperor's court, a Harkonen and somebody else went there to make sure they weren't overheard?"
(erdraug 1/13/2008 5:16:53 AM) |
"That's right - he called it a cone of silence. It actually first appeared in a 1958 story by Frank Herbert - Cease Fire. I also have the Herbert quote you were thinking of in the cone of silence article."
(Bill Christensen 1/13/2008 7:30:18 AM) |
"The possible practical applications for this technology are endless! e.g. Subways, Trains, Crowded Elevators..."
(S.B.D 1/15/2008 5:34:27 PM) |
"From what I've read this cloak is not capable of keeping noise in (cone of silence) but rather bends noise around. Perhaps it is simply a matter of flipping a mathmatical switch to keep noise in, but a 5 foot thick concrete wall is probably cheaper and just as effective. Also nothing I've come across proclaims that these materials do anything extrordinary in blocking sound waves so wrapping your house in it would not stop you from waking up to the sound of your neighbor mowing the lawn at 7AM on a Saturday. This is really much more like an eliptical whispering wall."
(Meditating Bear 1/17/2008 10:06:26 AM) |
"That's what I was trying to get across - it bends sound waves around an obstacle."
(Bill Christensen 1/17/2008 12:11:27 PM) |
"Don't forget about the never-worked-as-advertised "cone of silence" from the 1960's TV series Get Smart"
( 1/17/2008 2:34:17 PM) |
"You bet - see the comment with a link for cone of silence above."
(Bill Christensen 1/17/2008 4:51:54 PM) |
