Fans of Philip K. Dick might be thinking about the preserving machine, which is "a Machine to process musical scores into living forms" (from his 1953 short story of the same name).
This use of DNA is clever, but doesn't count as a prediction. Scientists have been doing this since about 2007; see Bacteria Save Your Data, Make Multiple Backups for details.
