Comments on Will In-Vitro Meat Change Our Lives?
IVM is one of those sfnal futures that seems to be getting closer and closer. (Read
the complete story)
"The "artificial human meat" idea also appeared in Sir Arthur C. Clarke short story "The Food Of The Gods" (1964)"
(Winchell Chung 11/19/2009 12:30:04 PM) |
"Combining meat and vegetables in the one product is a possibility. I want a Pepperoni tree with sauce berries."
(Peter Jacobs 11/19/2009 5:30:09 PM) |
"Charlton Heston: "In-Vitro Meat is people!.." ;)"
( 11/20/2009 12:08:04 AM) |
"You people scoff. Have you been following the fast food industry lately? How about the companies that make turkey based foods? Or everybody's favorite, hot dogs? In Vitro is just an easier way for WalMart to bypass the cattle industry altogether.
And everybody thought Spam was terrible...."
(Joey1058 11/20/2009 9:26:58 PM) |
"The graphic novel Transmetropolitan has alot of invitro meat. Human meat is marketed under the name "Long Pig" and includes child size portions (baby arms and legs). Also a favorite is carribou eyes and seals. :D"
( 11/25/2009 2:46:16 PM) |
"'Long pig' is an old term for human meat. If you listen closely, you can hear it in a historically correct context in the second Pirates of the Caribbean movie (for those who enjoy pop culture references!)."
(Bill Christensen 11/25/2009 6:25:07 PM) |
"Joey1058 - I'll bet you're right about the food industry. The first places that in vitro meat will appear in America is in 'food' that is constructed from meat byproducts anyway. Like hot dogs, chicken nuggets, etc."
(Bill Christensen 11/25/2009 6:26:56 PM) |
"Peter - great idea! That reminds me of the Little People in Heinlein's 'Methuselah's Children'. They were masters of genetic manipulation as well as mind reading. They read the thoughts of human visitors to their planet, and then altered the genetic structure of local plants. The result: a plant that tasted like mashed potatoes and brown gravy! Charcoal-broiled steak and mushrooms!"
(Bill Christensen 11/25/2009 6:28:21 PM) |
