Comments on DARPA Gandalf Project And Philip K. Dick
The ability to target a single individual is one of Philip K. Dick's personal nightmares; he had a very special understanding of the military mind. (Read the complete story)

"So what will they do if the guy keeps his cell phone turned off?"
(Joe Nickence 10/13/2008 3:49:17 AM)
"Joe - good point. However, recent developments suggest that unless you take the battery out of the phone, it can still be turned on remotely and listened to. Also, there are persistent stories that the Israelis helped set up the first cell phone networks in Palestinian areas, and used the information to target selected individuals."
(Bill Christensen 10/14/2008 5:51:53 AM)
"Not that I am in any way advocating this film, but Eagle Eye utilized a similar function. That movie was terrible. I think in the Dark Knight they use something similar as well."
(Zac Hunter 10/14/2008 1:55:32 PM)
"Yes; that film used a number of ideas from other sf novels. The ability of the AI to find a given individual and then ring a phone right next to him (done several times in Eagle Eye) was first done in a very cool scene in Neuromancer, if I remember right."
(Bill Christensen 10/16/2008 3:57:10 PM)
"This would be nearly impossible unless that targeted phone was a sattelite phone. You cannot pinpoint the exact location of a phone on a modern GSM network. You can get close, but not that close."
(Noah Dretren 10/30/2008 9:11:11 AM)
"Noah - that's true; that's why DARPA wants to have multiple short-range detectors. That's what gives them the needle-eyeification they're looking for."
(Bill Christensen 10/30/2008 11:10:44 AM)
