"I was perfectly satisfied to write science fiction knowing that it would pay very little, that it would be seen by only a very few people."

In the travels of the New Frontiers in the novel, the colonists run across a very tidy little planet inhabited by The Little People.
In the novel, it is also possible for people to join these groups. One of the Howard Families, Mary Sperling, does so:
The idea of a group mind can be found as early as 1930 in Olaf Stapledon's Last and First Men.
Compare to the ring-table from The Universe Wreckers (1930) by Edmond Hamilton, a device which creates a group mind among participants. See also the entry for hive mind from Face of the Deep (1942) by Edmond Hamilton, probably the first use of that phrase. Another similar idea is composite living from The Day the Aliens Came (1995) by Robert Sheckley. Comment/Join this discussion ( 2 ) | RSS/XML | Blog This | Additional
