"There's no point in making a mistake unless you understand the mistake so that you don’t make it again."
- Alfred Bester

Lucid Dreamer
A machine that guarantees productive REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, and therefore dreams.

Sweet dreams are hard to come by in the rifter world. Mechanical aids are welcome.

Alice Nakata lies twitching on her bunk, eyes closed... Leads trail away from insertion points on her face and wrist, drape away to a lucid dreamer on the bedside shelf.

Clarke steps closer, studies the telltales on the device; induced REMs cranked to maximum and the alarm's disabled. Nakata would have been out in seconds...

Lucid dreaming is a real phenomenon; we all do it at one time or another. The idea is that you are dreaming, but you know you are dreaming, and you can control to some extent the course of the dream.

The first references to the phrase "lucid dreaming" date from the early 20th century.

Compare to the dream console from The Dream Master (1966) by Roger Zelazny.
