"Self-education is, I firmly believe, the only kind of education there is."
- Isaac Asimov

Atlotl/Gibiril Regimen
A method of altering the flow of energy in the body to aid in regrowth of damaged or missing tissue.

This is an interesting extension of some of the medical ideas pursued by Herbert in the Dune series of books.

Orne began to show small but steady signs of recovery... they placed him on an atlotl/gibiril regimen, forcing the energy transfer which allowed him to regrow his lost fingers and eye, restore his scalp line and erase the other internal-external damage.

This kind of theory, that there are energy flows in the body, is characteristic of Eastern philosophy. (The book itself offers an interesting look at religion, as you might guess from the title.) The plot of the book revolves around the idea of psi as a real energy that humans and others can experience. As always, Frank Herbert creates an intriguing whole in his novels.

One of the alternative medical procedures that attempt to alter the flow of chi, or life energy, in the body is acupuncture (from the Latin acus for “needle” and punctura for “to puncture"). Hair-thin needles are inserted into specific meridian points on the body to regulate the flow of energy; a weak electrical current is sometimes used to increase the energy flow.

Regardless of whether you agree with the theory behind acupuncture (invisible life energy), in late 1997 the National Institutes of Health (NIH) endorsed acupuncture as a valid medical treatment for a variety of illnesses, such as postoperative and chemotherapy-associated nausea and vomiting, nausea in pregnancy, and postoperative dental pain.
