"The whole problem of energy sources is going to be solved by little solutions, not by some big new piece of technology that does everything. We got into this crisis by believing that we had one big piece of technology that would do everything (oil)."
- Gregory Benford

Dog Suit
A disguise worn by an alien detective, allowing him to look just like a domestic canine.

It's a little difficult to describe what is happening in Doorways in the Sand. It describes a near future in which contact has been made with a larger civilization encompassing many planets and races. Circumstances arise in which it becomes necessary for alien cops to keep an eye on certain people on earth - difficult, considering the fact that these aliens are not remotely human.

The scruffy-looking dog rose and came to my bedside.

"The Lon Chaney of the interstellar set" - I observed. "You make a lousy dog, Ragma."

He unsnapped several sections of his disguise and accepted the cigarette. I could not make out what he looked inside.

My other favorite alien from this book is Dr. Mrmm'mrm'mlrr (pronounced just like it looks) who is a sentient (and telepathic) psychotherapist plant who practices assault therapy on his patients.
