Fresh Academy graduates came on board with j.g. status only, and worked in charge of an enlisted maintenance crew on the “jump-along” — that abstract mechanical brain whose function it was to set up the obscure mathematic-symbolic relationships which made it possible for matter to be transmitted through the “holes” in space-time, enabling a ship to travel an infinite distance in an infinitesimal time. |
