"[Science fiction] has become big business, where books are merchandised and promoted and distributed and placed on sale like slabs of bacon or cans of soup."
- Frederik Pohl

Visor
A snap-down video screen for your eyes only.

"Happiness is transient," Rickenharp muttered as he flipped the visorclip back. The visor looked like the strap-and-mirror affairs that doctors wore, only the screen that snapped down over the eyes was rectangular, like a rear view mirror.

The author refers to the circular "bullseye" mirror that was a standard part of a general practitioner's equipment through the 1950's. To use it, the doctor swung it down over one eye, and then looked through the hole in the center into the patient's nose or throat; reflected ambient light improved the view.

I remember these from my childhood encounters with physicians; if the doctor had a poor bedside manner with children, adding a giant reflective eye in the center of his forehead did not improve matters.
