As far as I know, this is the first reference to annoying advertisements that are popped right up in your face, forcing you to walk through them. This technique takes what is called "interruption advertising" to the max.
Those idiot ads that scroll at random that you see in your mall today are the modern-day equivalent.
At this early point in the story, an immortal named Guig has just met his next project for immortality, an Cherokee Indian chief named Guess.

It was a typical campus trap, spaced out psychedelia ... tripping bods on the floor blown out of their minds, projection commercials standing around like realsies. "Hello," a jolly giant was saying. "I'm your friendly recycling bank. In our friendly effotts to conserve ecology we want you to let us recycle your money which -" We walked through him and went to the empty bar. |

The use of advertisements like this can be seen clearly in movies like Minority Report, during a sequence in which Tom Cruise's character walks through a mall.
