"If you have a gut response to a story, you are not responding to something new ..you are really responding to a story you were told when you were six or seven…"
- Samuel R. Delany

SAL 9000
  Successor to the HAL 9000.

The console was never switched off; [Dr. Chandra] checked that no messages were flashing importantly on the display, then spoke into the microphone.

"Good morning, Sal. So you've nothing new for me?"

"No, Dr. Chandra. Have you anything new for me?"

The voice might have been that of any cultured Hindu lady educated in the United States as well as her own country. Sal's accent had not started that way, but over the years she had picked up many of Chandra's intonations.

...No matter that Sal did not really understand more than a fraction of what he said; her responses were so convincing that even her creator was sometimes deceived.

And, with a hat-tip to the deities of fair use, you can take a look at the relevant material from the excellent movie version of 2010, directed by Peter Hyams and released in 1984.

(Dr. Chandra talks with the SAL 9000 in 2010 the movie)

When Dr. Chandra is about to disconnect parts of SAL's "brain" to see what will happen, and thereby be in a better position to reactivate the HAL 9000 computer, SAL has a question:

"Dr. Chandra, will I dream?"

"Of course you will dream. All intelligent creatures dream. No one knows why. Perhaps you will dream of HAL - as I often do."
