Floating islands have a long history; the Uros people of Lake Titicaca, Peru, built their villages on immense rafts of bundled totora reeds. These artificial islands were, in turn, based on naturally occurring floating islands.
Perelandra, the C.S. Lewis novel, describes floating islands on the surface of Venus.
