"I started writing in the 1930's when I was eighteen years old. And deep inside me I'm still eighteen and it's still 1938."
- Isaac Asimov

Electric Bicycle
A two-wheeled device utilizing stored electricity as motive power.

As far as I know, the first electric bicycle patents appeared in the 1890's, so this is an early mention for science fiction, but probably not an original idea.

Bicycles, I found, were no longer a fad or a nuisance. Separate paths were provided for them, and, on these, electric bicycles, tricycles, and carriages were run, with power supplied from stations at regular intervals, and at all hotels, by recharging the storage batteries.

The first use was probably in an 1895 patent application by Ogden Bolton. The patent application included a drawing of a bicycle with a small electric motor mounted on the front wheel. The motor was connected to the pedals, and it would provide assistance to the rider when they pedaled.

"The invention relates to a bicycle having an electric motor, and the object of the invention is to provide a bicycle which can be propelled by the rider's power, or by the power of the motor, or by a combination of the two powers."
