As far as I know, this is the first reference to annoying advertisements that are popped right up in your face, forcing you to walk through them. This technique takes what is called "interruption advertising" to the max.
Those idiot ads that scroll at random that you see in your mall today are the modern-day equivalent.
At this early point in the story, an immortal named Guig has just met his next project for immortality, an Cherokee Indian chief named Guess.

The use of advertisements like this can be seen clearly in movies like Minority Report, during a sequence in which Tom Cruise's character walks through a mall.
