"I've taken some stick for passages in Altered Carbon which people complained had sickened them, but then violence should be sickening."
- Richard Morgan

Neotopological Metaeuclidean Adjacency
  A portal through space-time.

Wilson Wu is one of those rare polymath individuals who seems to know a lot about a lot of different things. And you never know what you're going to find when looking for Volvo parts.

Wu said "I suspect we're dealing with one of the rarest occurrences in the Universe. A neotopological metaeuclidean adjacency... In fact, I think this might be the only one."

"You're sure about this?"

"... Look at the figures, Irv! Numbers don't lie. That equation shows how space-time can be folded so that two parts are adjacent that are also, at the same time, separated by millions of miles...."

"So we're talking about a sort of back door to ..."

"Exactly."

From The Hole in the Hole, by Terry Bisson.
Published by Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine in 1994

This is a great story; read it and have fun with it.

Frank Herbert's Whipping Star provides a scarier look at shortcuts through the space-time continuum; see the entry for vortal tubes.
