EVs To Be Made In ICE Detroit-Hamtramck Plant
General Motor's Detroit-Hamtramck plant has produced millions of internal combustion engine (ICE) cars. But all that history is gone, now.
GM’s $2.2 billion plan to build all-electric vehicles at Detroit-Hamtramck will start to take effect. When the plant is retooled to build the all-electric GMC Hummer pickup and the self-driving Cruise Origin (also purely electric) – and the facility is in full swing – it will employ 2,200 people.
GM opened the factory in 1985. It built 4 million vehicles there – from the Oldsmobile Toronado to the Cadillac Eldorado. Every car manufactured in those 35 years had an internal-combustion engine, including the Chevrolet Volt built there for nearly a decade.
Now, the era of internal-combustion at D-Ham comes to an end.
Electric cars were actually some of the first motor vehicles; science fiction writers like John Jacob Astor IV were quick to see that EVs represented the very future of the automotive industry:

With hollow but immensely strong galvanically treated aluminum frames and pneumatic or cushion tires, they run at thirty-five and forty miles an hour on country roads, and attain a speed over forty on city streets, and can maintain this rate without recharging for several days...
