Organovo Organ Printing Future Video
Organovo is a regenerative medicine company that seeks to apply organ printing technology to medical research and tissue repair.
To achieve the goal of fully biological tissue constructs that fully match native structure, Organovo uses a breakthrough organ printing technology. By marrying a knowledge of biophysics and cell biology with the precision of computer aided design and high precision deposition, [they] can recreate the microarchitecture of even the most complex human tissue. The "ink" in the bioprinting process employed by Organovo is composed of spheres packed with tens of thousands of human cells. These spheres are assembled or "printed" on sheets of organic biopaper. By precisely placing the cells with the bioprinter, and providing them with the proper natural developmental cues, they do exactly what they do in nature: they self assemble into fully formed, functional tissue
Artificial organs have been a science fiction staple since Philip K. Dick wrote about artiforgs in his 1964 novel Cantata 140 and Larry Niven's artificially grown organs in his 1968 novel A Gift From Earth.
