Philips Flexible E-Paper World's Highest Resolution

LG Philips flexible e-paper, to demonstrated at CES 2008 next Monday, has the highest resolution of any flexible e-paper LCD display. If you've been looking for Neal Stephenson's mediatron, you might be in luck this year.

This stunning 14.3-inch e-paper display has a resolution of 1280x800 pixels. The paper-thin and flexible display can show 16.7 million colors. And at just 300 micrometers in thickness, you're getting very close to that paper-thin feel.

Philips makes use of metal foil and plastic substrates; that's what gives the e-paper display its flexibility. The thin-film transistors (TFTs) are anchored to foil rather than glass. The display has a display angle of virtually 180 degrees; this comes in handy when the display is bent. The e-paper display uses LG.Philips LCD’s proprietary processing technology to minimize panel deformation and prevent circuit structure change during high-temperature processes-focusing on the designs of the color filter structure and TFT, as well as color filter lamination technology. This allows the display to overcome processing difficulties inherent in the lack of heat resistance in metal foil and plastic substrates.

Science fiction fans have seen this future already in both print books and movies. Here's your mediatron quote, from Stephenson's 1995 classic The Diamond Age.

Bud took a seat and skimmed a mediatron from the coffee table; it looked exactly like a dirty, wrinkled, blank sheet of paper. "'Annals of Self-Protection,'" he said, loud enough for everyone else in the place to hear him. The logo of his favorite meedfeed coalesced on the page.

For those of you who like your science fiction in the wide screen format (like Spielberg's Minority Report) the new Philips e-paper display certainly gives hope than an e-newspaper is not far away.
