"I have been a soreheaded occupant of a file drawer labeled 'Science Fiction' and I would like out, particularly since so many serious critics regularly mistake the drawer for a urinal."
- Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.

Palm Flower
  It's like a life clock.

"Show me your hand, Logan," said the psyc doctor.

Logan obeyed.

"Do you know why you have this?" he said, tapping the palmflower with an index finger.

"To tell my age," said Logan.

"And how old are you?"

"I'm six."

And what happens when you are seven?"

"It goes to blue... and I leave the nursery."

Technovelgy from Logan's Run, by William Nolan (w/G.C. Johnson).

The implanted palm flower changes color every seven years; yellow (age 0–6), then blue (age 7–13), then red (age 14–20), then blinks red and black on Lastday, and finally turns black at age 21 - state-mandated death.

Compare to the cardioplate from Harlan Ellison's 1965 novel Repent Harlequin, Said the TickTockMan.
