This fictional device continues the long line of original contributions made by writers to the ""getting around in zero gee" category. Compare the wire-gun to the electrical 'tether' from the 1898 story Edison's Conquest of Mars by Garrett P. Serviss and the
broomstick from Arthur C. Clarke's 1952 novel Islands in the Sky.
