"If we're going to be consistent and advocate freedom of speech we have to advocate freedom of encrypted speech too. The genie is out of the bottle, cryptologically."
- Neal Stephenson

A-Som (Antisomnolence Drugs)
One simple pill removes the need for sleep.

Would you like to increase your lifespan by a third? If you didn't need to sleep, you could get 8 extra hours of wakefulness out of every 24.

Developed countries who could afford the pricey proprietary drugs now operated on twenty-four/seven time. (The poor nations remained zones of sleep infiltrated by rich elites of the perpetually wakeful.) The vast majority of the citizens of America, for instance, made no distinction among any of the hours in any given twenty-four hour period. Work and play, study and travel, might occur at any time of the day.

The story provides a fascinating and detailed vision of what it would be like to be a "sleeper" in a world of people who didn't need to sleep.

From the excellent anthology of original stories Futureshocks, edited by Lou Anders.
