GlowRing: Light Without Power
The GlowRing will glow for up to ten years in these “funky” colors: green, ice blue, orange, purple, yellow and blush pink. GlowRings do not require any external power source (and no internal source – that is, a battery – either!).
The GlowRing also comes in a keychain form factor.

Here’s how it works:
“Each [glowring] is a small hollow glass tube, which has been internally coated with a phosphorous material, injected with a special gas and then sealed by a laser. The gas inside the tube excites the phosphor, which creates a cold light that will glow for ten years without any external power source."
Frank Herbert wrote about a light source called a glowglobe that apparently did not require any external power source. The implication is that glowglobes also provided a soft light, rather than a beam.
