Comments on Stereo Omnidirectional System Intelligent Wheelchair
No blind spots and 360 degree vision - this wheelchair sees it all. (Read
the complete story)
""Remarkably, it is also possible for the user of the wheelchair to 'steer' the chair using hand signals."
Funny; I can do this with existing powerchairs. So can folks even more impaired than I am. If I let the chair "avoid obstacles", I'd never get through a shopping mall full of inconsiderate people who don't see anything below shoulder height; it'd be constantly dodging until the motor overheated.
"The wireless functionality of the camera system can be used to show the location of the chair to family members or other interested parties on a continuing basis. This could help caregivers or family members keep track of a severely disabled person."
Yes, let's undo any of the independence a powerchair gives the user by making them trackable by their "carers".
Well, I'm safe anyway; there's no way Medicare would ever fund it. If we get engineers working on *that* problem, maybe I could have an iBot.
I'm sure this technology has lots of uses, but there's a hundred better things any wheelchair user would like to see engineers tackle.

"Great comment! I hope we'll get more perspectives from engineers, caregivers and users of assistive devices."
