Comments on HAL vs. XOS: Who Will Have First Iron Man Suit?
I'm looking forward to the Iron Man movie, but what I'm really looking forward to is real robotic exoskeletons. Check out the contenders. (Read
the complete story)
"Just so you know, I hadn't forgotten about all those cool leg exoskeletons. See the Berkeley BLEEX, the MIT exoskeleton and the ReWalk Medical exoskeleton."
(Bill Christensen 4/17/2008 7:56:04 PM) |
"Japanese and Chinese beat American in almost any achievement, art or tech."
(Sabre Runner 4/18/2008 9:01:36 AM) |
"CYBERDYNE? Making a robotic HAL suit?
No one see whats wrong with that picture?"
(Will 4/20/2008 3:59:47 AM) |
"Caption should read, "HAL - Iron Man - Sarcos XOS exoskeletons compared"."
(Chris Johnston 4/21/2008 2:01:44 PM) |
"Chris - you're right, thanks! Will - you don't think that SkyNet created Terminators from scratch, do you? ;-)"
(Bill Christensen 4/21/2008 6:07:15 PM) |
"Did you see the problem with both suits? No hand power. Hooks don't cut it. Can you imagine grabbing something and pulling hard with your powered arm - you would lose your grip instantly."
(Sam 4/22/2008 10:41:21 AM) |
"HAL-5 definately. The XOS is slower in data-transmitting the muscle movement. HAL-5 can do it faster than your own limbs and reacts before you do. Anyway, here's my big thought: Combine them. Imagine someone in a HAL suit wearing the XOS. You could stick them in a large armored suit that carries a big enough battery to last for hours. The suit would be large enough to harness helicopter hard-point weapons. "
(Colonel Marksman 8/17/2008 12:29:16 PM) |
"Colonel, curious how you came to that conclusion, in the videos it seems HAL is at a loss to the XOS in terms of reactive mobility. The HAL looked quite unwieldy in it's demonstrations, despite the user being reluctant to do anything much beyond posing for the camera whilst shifting positions slowly. As far as ability in strength, the XOS again has it hands down, just the frame of it seems much more suited for handling loads."
( 10/9/2008 10:43:03 PM) |
"From what I've seen the XOS is stronger and offers more use in military and labor, but the HAL is more compact and can run off a battery, more suited to helping disabled and enhancing athletes. So depending on uses I'd say xos for front lines and HAL for rehabilitation, Of course it would be cool for Cyberdyne and Raytheon to team up and create a more rounded suit"

"(i'm with colenel!)"

"I agree with the no-name response to Colonel. The XOS seems way more responsive than the HAL. When watching the demo video of the HAL, the user seems to waddle when they walk and also seem to be less able to control the suit dexterously. Another issue is the hand aspect, which could easily be solved. In fact, I recently did and am now working to improve a version of a pneumatically powered exo-skeletal glove that provides pneumatically-assisted grip for hands. The pneumatics could easily be replaced with hydraulics, but I didn't have the resources for that seeing as I am only a high school student. This is my senior year, and I'm working on making the glove that I made wearable (it was a tad undersized for my hand) and able to exert a greater force through the fingers. I also want to make it armored with a combination of metal plates and a force-distributive type of armor (such as the Dragon Skin armor, proven more effective than Kevlar) to make it a practical military application. What do you guys think?"
(Jesse 10/18/2009 4:53:57 PM) |
"Did not I read some time ago that they had created an exoskeleton with no batteries or motor?
In any case, I'm interested in buying.
If I can not, then rent it.
Does anyone can tell me where they rent or sell?

"We need an iron man exactly as the used in the movie if this generation cannot produce an iron then i would produce it i just the knowledge then i build my iron man suit thank you"
