Comments on Bacteria Torture Tests Demonstrate Evolution
Dr. Richard Lenski has followed in the footsteps of famous sf writers, creating captive worlds and learning from them. (Read
the complete story)
"I would not classify modifications in the bacteria made by natural selection as evolution, and more than I would classify a new breed of dog as evolution. When the bacteria becomes a different organism altogether, then I would be intrigued."

"Here's a common definition of evolution from Wikipedia:
"In biology, evolution is the change in the inherited traits of a population from generation to generation. These traits are the expression of genes that are copied and passed on to offspring during reproduction. Mutations in these genes can produce new or altered traits, resulting in heritable differences (genetic variation) between organisms. New traits can also come from transfer of genes between populations, as in migration or horizontal gene transfer. Evolution occurs when these heritable differences become more common or rare in a population, either nonrandomly through natural selection or randomly through genetic drift."
(From Evolution definition)
What you are talking about (I think) is speciation, the creation of new species. Wikipedia puts it this way:
"Speciation is the evolutionary process by which new biological species arise. There are four modes of natural speciation, based on the extent to which speciating populations are geographically isolated from one another: allopatric, peripatric, parapatric, and sympatric. Speciation may also be induced artificially, through animal husbandry or laboratory experiments."
(From Speciation definition)
So, in this experiment, evolution has taken place, but not speciation. BTW, the Wikipedia article on speciation has known examples where this has occurred."
