Virtual Epiphantic Identity Lustre (VEIL) is a clever idea (and acronym!) from Fall; or, Dodge in Hell: A Novel, by Neal Stephenson, published by William Morrow in 2019.
Other science-fictional ideas include the scramble suit from Philip K. Dick's 1977 novel A Scanner Darkly, the Jodie grid from The Diamond Age (1995) by Neal Stephenson and the abglanz from The Mountain in the Sea (2022) by Ray Naylor.
