MULTI First Cable-Free Elevator Like Turbolift

Although the Otis elevator is renowned for safety, and made possible the skyscrapers we see today, it has serious limits. A single elevator car requires a dedicated shaft from the top of the building to the bottom (or to a high floor) and the design now limits the height and configuration of buildings.

Enter MULTI, the dream of ThyssenKrupp.

(ThyssenKrupp MULTI video)

Global transportation manufacturer ThyssenKrupp, is set to test the first units of their cable-free MULTI elevator system once the testing tower in Rottweil, Germany is complete by the end of 2016.

MULTI's design is derived from the company's TWIN control system and safety features. Deemed as the world's first cable-free elevator, MULTI includes a multi-level brake system and multiple self-propelled cabins that can be incorporated within the same elevator shaft.

Operating on a circular system, the elevators will be able to move vertically and horizontally in a loop at a speed of 5 m/s, powered by new linear motor technology similar to that of the Transrapid magnetic-levitation train. Passengers would have access to an elevator cabin every 15-30 seconds with a transfer stop every 50 meters.

Of course, Star Trek fans already have their own dream of this elevator; they call it the turbo lift, which also travels in different directions in the ship. However, it is not without its challenges...
