Wasabi-Based Odor Alarm
A wasabi-based fire alarm is under development at Japan's Shiga University of Medical Science. The heart of the device is a set of spray cans filled with essence of wasabi horseradish.

The device worked on 13 out of 14 test subjects. The intent is that this device could be used for a fire alarm for people who are unable to hear.

Frank Herbert writes about the odalarm, an alarm clock that uses scent rather than sound, in his 1977 novel The Dosadi Experiment
