"Eyephones date back to the 1980s. The term "eyephone" may have been invented, and was certainly popularized, by Jaron Lanier of VPL.
Head-mounted displays (HMDs) and earlier Heads Up Displays (HUDs) certainly existed before that point, and dozens of models and attempts to come up with viable technologies of this sort have come and gone. The idea seems to be hitting a revival with the recent popularity and increasing capabilities (CPU, storage, bandwidth) of smart phones and other handheld computing devices."
