Mass-Driver Catapult

An escape-speed induction catapult to launch material into orbit. (Read the full article)

"Mass drivers predated the work at MIT by a long time. Find a copy of E. H. Laithwaites's "Induction Machines for Special Purposes" for an intro to linear induction motors. They were an old concept when I helped construct a 1" bore linear induction motor to let EEs compete in the campus catapult contest for engineering day in 1972. The linear induction motor works for transient single shots, but can also function as a continuous pump or linear motion motor when driven by multiphase electricity. "
