Ambrose Bierce:

Ambrose Bierce (1842 - ?) served as an officer in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was a journalist and editor in San Francisco; his favorite literary form was satire. His famous Devil's Dictionary is a masterpiece of American humor. At the age of 71, he left his literary fame and rode off into Mexico, never to be seen again.
