Polymer Vision Readius With Merely Foldable Display
Readius E-Reader with foldable display? I'm not sure whether we're really moving forward on this one or not. About a year and a half ago, I wrote a story on the Philips Readius E-Reader With Rollable Display (see pictures). Not in production, but at least there was a prototype.
Now, Polymer Vision (a spin-off of Philips) is touting a Readius with a merely foldable display. It starts out folded.

The full display measures 127 mm; it displays 16 shades of grey and has 4 GB of on-board memory for all your e-books. The folded unit is 56mm x 100mm x 21mm. It has about a ten-day battery life and has USB, GPRS/EDGE and DVB-H connectivity to download data wirelessly.
The device will actually be available for sale sometime this year; perhaps phone makers will take note.
We (sf fans, that is) are still waiting for the polycarbon phone screen from William Gibson's 1986 novel Count Zero:
"We'll key that to the image on this phone." He took an elegant modular unit from the bag and placed it in front of her. A paper thin polycarbon screen unfurled silently from the top of the unit and immediately grew rigid. She had once watched a butterfly emerge into the world, and seen the transformation of its drying wings. "How is that done?" she asked, tentatively touching the screen. It was like thin steel.
