Heart Patches Grown In The Lab Repair Hearts
Here's an inspiring story about advances in medical technology that everyone should take to heart. University Medical Center Göttingen had a patient who could no longer wait for a transplant. They took donor stem cells, reprogrammed them into heart muscle cells, and mixed in connective tissue.
The result? A living, beating heart patch.
(From Heart Patches Grown In The Lab Repair Hearts)
As you see, I wrote an article on a similar procedure done almost twenty years ago (see Cultured Muscle Sheet Used To Repair Heart).
SF fans have been waiting for handy repair materials cultured from the patient's own flesh and blood for a long time. The advent of the artificially grown liver for transplantation was one of the core issues discussed by science fiction writer Larry Niven in his 1968 novel A Gift from Earth. (Read about Larry Niven's artificially grown organs.)
